All Grown Up

Despite getting married over a year ago, having a big girl job, being in my mid-twenties*, etc. I have never really felt like an adult. Granted, I never really thought about it, but still...I think the fact that I never thought about it means I didn't identify with that role.

Does that make sense?

As I sit here thinking about this weekend, I feel old. Not in a bad way, but in a grown up way. Nothing really significant happened, but I just feel like I'm there (kind of like those State Farm commercials).
  • I payed three different bills on Friday. Enough said.
  • This morning I went to church because I wanted to, not because my parents told me to (which used to be the case when I was younger). I am even thinking about joining a church. I was raised Catholic and although I wasn't practicing for a long time, I feel like I am ready again. We'll see how this pans out...
  • This afternoon I went to a home show party. Not only did I attend, but I wanted everything in the catalog. Now that we live in a real house, I want to decorate and organize like a crazy person. I bought a bunch of super cute (and functional) items and can't wait until they are delivered. It will be like Christmas morning!
  • On my way home from the party I stopped by Michaels and bought supplies to make a fall wreath and a holiday wreath. I used to do crafty stuff with my mom and aunts when I was younger, but when I moved away I stopped. Miss Mindless likes to craft, so she has motivated me to get back into it. I am so excited to do all the projects I have swirling through my head.
  • This evening I used one of those headset things to call my grandma while I was chopping vegetables for chicken soup. Multitasking at its finest! You know, because adults multitask.
I know some or maybe all of these things may not seem adult-like to others, and I can't really explain why each of them resonates with me, but they do. I'm not sure if the feeling will last, but for now....I feel like a grown up.

What things make you feel like a grown up?

* BTW, when did this happen? I still get nervous when ordering/buying alcohol and the person asks to see my ID.

  1. Not to be cliche, but you are only as old as you feel! I know what you mean though. I think becoming a wife and taking care of another person like that really made me feel like an adult. But working in a high school, the kids always remind me I am old when I am in my mid-twenties, so that also does it!

  2. I never really thought about these things as being grown-up before, but I do now that you said that. Isn't it crazy how it all comes so fast and all the sudden you're married and grown up? Ooh and that wreath sounds like fun if you need a grown-up friend to do it with. Oh and P.S. I go to a great church if you want to try out something different :)

  3. I know exactly how you feel. Sometimes my friends and I are like, "Hmmm, when did we become actual real live adults?" For me, one of my big moments was when I realized I hated my crappy cheap vacuum cleaner and started considering getting something nicer. Wow.

  4. Teaching 8 year olds and them not getting the silly references I make. And making my mortgage payment.

  5. ohhh...be sure to post pics of the wreaths you make!
For me....having our son made me feel like a grownup. I just turned 26 when I had him and up until I got pregnant, I felt young and extremely youthful. It changed when I got pregnant. Not that I feel old - but in a different phase of my life.

  7. being old DOES suck - big time. every now and then i get this pang in my stomach wishing i was back in college. things were so easy then - i had no idea how good i had it. :)

i definitely feel you on the church thing. i was raised catholic, but stopped going the second i had a choice. now i'm trying to get back into it. that in itself just seems like a very adult thing to do! :)

  8. I'm not sure if I am quite there yet. I still find myself calling my parents and saying "there is a cheap flight home in a few weeks, is it okay if I come visit?" like I need their permission first :)

  9. Wait until you hit your thirties! Then you'll definitely feel grown up. It's kind of weird, but home improvement projects and shopping at Lowe's makes me feel grown up.

  10. i don't know that i'll ever feel "grown up" but there are plenty of times i feel older... sometimes just OLD. i think the worst part is when you actually do the math and realize you only really have __ good years left to accomplish all those things on your list, things you always just assumed you'd do. especially when it comes to havin' babies... i'm not ready for one right now but i also wish i had one 4 years ago just so i wouldn't be facing all the medical stuff i'll be facing now. ugh, getting older sucks. i am definitely bitter about not being in my early 20's anymore... we were invincible and eternal then.

  11. Even though I'm in my early thirties and have been paying a mortgage for 7 years now, I still don't feel like a grown up. I sometimes wonder what did I do in my twenties, where did the time go...it seems like it took forever to get there but then it was over. Now, I have to decide if I want kids or not....and get it done b/c apparently after the age of 35 there are all of these things that you have to consider b/c you're older....I never thought about that in my twenties. To be 21 again......

  12. Don't worry, I'm a married 30-year-old father of two with a professional job and a graduate degree...and I still don't feel like a grown-up! The older I get, the more I appreciate feeling this way.
