The Thanksgiving Plan

Next week AJ, Kona, and I are venturing up to the Poconos for Thanksgiving weekend. Last year we drove back to NY for both Thanksgiving and Christmas and it was just too much. This year we decided to rent a cabin with both sets of parents and meet half way. I am excited about being holed up in the woods for a few days, but am also freaking out about all 6 of us (and 2 dogs) spending 4 days together....crazy, right?

We hosted my parents, my brother, and AJ's parents for Thanksgiving in North Carolina two years ago and that was a success. We had a nice Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, the guys played golf while the ladies went shopping on Friday, we all went to the ECU football game on Saturday, and everyone parted ways on Sunday. However, our parents were in hotels, so we all had our own space and could part ways if need be.

Everyone gets along pretty well, but there are a few distinct differences between our families. My brother usually provides comic relief when things get tense or awkward, but he has to work and won't be joining us this year. I am hoping we can all get along and that there are no major issues. Otherwise we're all in for a loonnnng weekend.

  1. I hope it all goes well for you guys - I can totally relate to your worries!

We're having our first Thanksgiving with my husband's paternal side of the family in four years, with the recent passing of his maternal grandmother, I feel that his mom is going to be in rare form. I hope that my husband's uncle and cousins are comic relief for us! In any case, I suspect that the blogs will be filled with stories when we return from Thanksgiving!

  2. It is going to be great :) Whatever your brother provided in humor, the 2 dogs will provide in chaos, so there is sure to be tension relief available! xo

  3. I find having a dog the best way to escape these sorts of things...I remember one xmas with both families together I took my dog for about 50 walks in one day!

  4. good luck with that
i definitely need my space when it comes to being with family for a few days in a row.
i assume there are separate rooms in the cabin... it should be like hanging out at someone's house together :)

  5. holy cow girl - you're brave.

i'd never put my brother & dad in the same house with my MIL and FIL for any more than 5 minutes at a time. they're all WAYYY too different.

i'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

  8. I'm sure it will be great. Just pray for great weather so that if things get awkward, you can go out for a nice long walk and enjoy the outdoors.

  9. I think a cabin in the mountains sounds great. We did that last weekend and loved it.

  10. Oh golly! Hope you have a wonderful holiday :) I totally get what you mean though. My parents are super laid back...and Matt's parents are...well not really uptight, but just way different. Love them both...but a whole weekend together....not going to happen :) Good luck!

  13. Don't worry too much - people always make an effort to get along in such situations. I had the same experience wiht my parents and in-laws a few years ago...everyone was so happy that we were together, nothing went wrong. Just don't take on all the stress youself and make it your responsibility to ensure everyone is happy - there is only so much you can do and you need to relax as well.
